Writing Samples

All the projects for this class are designed on fake scenarios, except my feature story. They are not to be associated with the real company I am writing to or about. The different writing pieces are designed to model different examples of writing that PR professionals do in their everyday work life, including media briefings, talking points for interviews, media pitches, etc. These pieces exemplify the use of AP Style, concise writing, critical communication and rhetoric style.

PRL 214: Writing for Public Relations

Taken:
Fall of 2024

Feature Story Sample

I did this sample to understand how to write an engaging and detailed nonfiction profile story. The story required that I conduct a thirty-minute face-to-face interview and practice AP Style. I decided to interview a cafe worker in Egger’s Cafe at the Maxwell School of Public Citizenship, for he is known to have great relations with the students who go to the cafe frequently, and I found it interesting.

Company Fact Sheet Sample

For most of my samples, I focused on Chipotle because of its dominance as a prominent American fast-food chain with lots of history, company values, and strategies. In this sample, I compiled a fact sheet which is usually a document PR Professionals send to journalists who are looking to cover a story regarding a company to learn more about it. In this sample, I demonstrated my ability to research and compile information about Chipotle regarding its DEIA principles, future job outlook, and history.

Internal Executive Messaging Sample

This sample represents an example of what an HR professional would create for a CEO or executive in a company to reach out to the rest of the organization. Many times, HR is behind the scenes, writing these internal messages. My example is from the perspective of Chipotle’s CEO reaching out to all Chipotle staff to go vote for the 2024 election.

Media Briefing Sample

This sample is a representative of what a PR professional working in-house as the Director of Communications or in the communications office would present to an executive at the company before an interview or press event. A media briefing contains all the necessary details and talking points that this executive may need to know before speaking with a journalist. My example is tailored for Chipotle’s CEO going into an interview with a journalist at the Tampa Bay Times.

Media Pitching Sample

Media Pitching is an important part of a PR professional’s role, as the media is something we must work in conjunction with. My sample of a media pitch to a journalist is centered on a fake scenario where Chipotle will be participating in a promotional volunteering event.
